The Simpsons writer addresses a gay sex joke on a show

A writer for The simpsons defended a gay sex joke the show made about recurring characters in Lenny and Carl’s relationship.

The prank in question happened when the pair were mistaken for a couple by fashion designer Michael De Graaf, the new boyfriend of Waylon Smithers.

In the episode, De Graaf was busy criticizing the Springfielders’ outfits when Lenny asked him what he thought of his “top”. In response, De Graaf took a long look at Carl and said “very nice”.

Johnny LaZebnik, writer of the series and creator of this joke, spoke to Attitude to fight for De Graaf’s line to stick despite the hesitation of other writers.

He said: “I’m a huge Lenny and Carl fan… We’ve worked on this scene a few times, and I was like, ‘How can we make this joke stick?!’

“There’s a lot of gay jokes that I helped put in there.”

Although LaZebnik is one of the driving forces behind making the show more LGBTQ+ friendly, one of the first people to express apprehension about the joke was his father, Rob LaZebnik – also a writer for The simpsons — who warned him “people won’t get the reference.”

“I was like [raises voice]: ‘We have an Chernobyl parody! We are doing it! ‘” Johnny said.

LaZebnik’s work on the show began with the episode “Portrait of a Lackey on Fire” when his father consulted him about the inner workings of the LGBTQ+ social networking app Grindr to make sure his joke would be realistic.

“I think my dad’s specific question was like, ‘Do you swipe on Grindr?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely not, you don’t,'” he said while speaking on the The gayest podcast ever.

“It’s the kind of thing a straight person would throw out as a joke… so a gay person watching it would be like, ‘I feel so alienated by this content because you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about.’

“I was really happy to be included and really grateful to have been able to give a little more authenticity to the gay world that they were creating.”

The simpsons is available to watch on Disney+.
