NORMAND, OKLA. —Norman journalist and TV-book author Larry Nemecek will be honored in June at Oklahoma’s longest-running pop culture convention, SoonerCon 30: Heroes Homecoming. The convention, founded in 1986, is the educational arm of the nonprofit Future Society of Central Oklahoma. Its award, the Nucleon, honors Oklahomans “for their outstanding contributions to the development of pop culture and speculative fiction both in Oklahoma and the world at large.”

Nemecek graduated from East Central University in Ada before landing a job at Norman Transcript. He became active in the local sci-fi fandom, serving with several conventions and founding ThunderCon, a 1990s function that hosted several stars from Star Trek and other media. Nemecek researched his own series of reference books for Star Trek: The Next Generation, citing guests, plots, cast, and crew. His self-published series was accepted by Paramount as its official guide for writers, leading to the authoritative The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, published in 1992.

After moving to California, Nemecek and his wife Janet wrote for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, among other projects. He worked for both Star Trek: The Magazine and Star Trek Communicator for several years. He participated in “Star Trek: The Experience” in Las Vegas and currently hosts his own Trek-related website and podcast. Recently, Nemecek can be seen in the History Channel’s 10-part docuseries The Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek.

Nemecek wrote on his blog about the award, “Good to know someone noticed, someone was affected by the ripples we sent…between helping build SoonerCon (and the ThunderCon – and even the little Starfest at ECU at Ada!)…to put behind-the-scenes TNG into the hands of young readers – and the TNG editorial team!…to help trace fake stars and preserving behind the scenes of the people of Trek and their stories, all for fans around the world and even live… Well, I wouldn’t change a minute of that life and career trying to be the Will Rogers of Star trekking.”

SoonerCon 30 will take place June 24-26 at Norman’s Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center. Activities include panel discussions and demonstrations, art exhibits, children’s programs, costume contests, games, unique vendors, dancing, and charity auctions. Some additional guests include actors Johnny Yong Bosch, J. Michael Tatum and Jamie Marchi.

Memberships can be purchased at SoonerCon. com. Children 12 and under are free with an adult membership.
