SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 Writer Talks This Post-Credits Reveal And What It Means For Movie Number Three – GeekTyrant

sonic the hedgehog 2 hit theaters a few weeks ago, moving the franchise’s story forward. It introduced fans and Sonic to both Tails and Knuckles, major characters in the universe, and just like the first film, it ended with a post-credits scene that teased another addition to the cast of the next movie. If you haven’t seen the post-credits scene yet, this is your spoiler warning.

The second film ends with Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Joins (Idris Elba), and tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) eliminating the evil Dr. Robotnik (jim carrey). As the army cleans up the aftermath of the battle, GUN commander Walters (Tom Butler), is informed of a research facility housing a decades-old project. The camera pans to this facility, where the test subject – Shadow the Hedgehog – is contained. The movie ends when Shadow wakes up and opens his eyes red and energized.

When we talk about the scene and what it means to sonic the hedgehog 3film co-writer Pat Casey told the Green Hill Zone podcast (via Gizmodo) that Shadow was brought to the franchise mainly because of his popularity, and also because of what he could bring to movies in the future. Casey described him as “driven by anger and revenge”, like Knuckles, but the main difference is that Shadow isn’t misunderstood like the red echidna was in the sequel. Shadow was created with the primary purpose of protecting the world from harm, but it’s how he does it that will put him at odds with Sonic and his friends. He went on to say:

“Sonic has never dealt with anyone as emotionally damaged as Shadow…when he sees Shadow, he’s like, ‘Well, I’m just going to teach him the power of friendship, like with Knuckles !’ But it won’t work on Shadow.

In the character’s background, Shadow’s desire to protect humanity stems from witnessing the death of his friend Maria at the hands of GUN. It looks like Shadow and Sonic may team up against GUN for the same goal, but Shadow arrives unknowingly. Sonic’s intentions, and he’s worried, having just gone through something traumatic. It could mean a darker Sonic movie than what we’ve seen so far, but I think fans are on board for whatever the third movie has in store.
