She-Hulk: Lawyer is set to make its way onto Disney Plus very soon and will be filled to the brim with Marvel characters. But is a Spider Man make an appearance?
The likes of Daredevil, Abomination, Wong and Bruce Banner are all appearing in supporting roles for the Disney Plus series as the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows and feels more connected. Many other characters are rumored to appear in the 30-minute comedy series, but will a certain webhead be among them?
Writer and series creator Jessica Gao spoke with The Direct about the fun of throwing characters into the mix and revealed that a few characters couldn’t be used due to rights issues. The other thing that held characters back from making potential cameos was that Marvel often had plans for them and didn’t plan to introduce them to the show.
“There were a lot of comic book characters – we wanted a lot of comic books for characters in funny situations where we could bring like a character and think of funny reasons why they would get in legal trouble. But there were a lot of characters from the comics that we couldn’t use either because of a rights issue or a few times because Marvel… all they said was they had d other plans. And that’s all they told us. And then we tried very, very hard to push and push and get a little bit more information. Of course, they wouldn’t tell us.
But when it comes to Spider-Man, Gao said they were “disappointed” they couldn’t use the character for the show. Likely due to the confusing rights situation surrounding Spider-Man between Marvel and Sony, as well as the fact that Tom Holland is probably too big a star to make an appearance.
“But I will say the one MCU character that really pissed off a lot of the writers in our play that we couldn’t use was Spider-Man and everyone involved – like in the Spider-Man universe. Because we had so many Spider-Man fans in the room.
It’s not a massive shock, all things considered. Spider-Man just had a climactic end-of-trilogy movie that saw his relationships completely reset, and She-Hulk traditionally hasn’t been much of a page lead in the comics. Audiences will need a buffer between Spidey’s adventures to maintain the mystique.
She-Hulk: Lawyer debuts on Disney Plus on August 18.
