Original Coronation Street legend Ernst Walder dies as soap writer pays tribute

Ernst Walder – who was an original cast member of ITV’s Coronation Street – tragically died in September, with former soap writer Daran Little confirming the news on Twitter today

Soap star Ernst Walder – who was an original cast member of Coronation Street – has sadly died aged 94.

Ernst played the role of Ivan Cheveski and he was also the boyfriend of ITV soap opera co-creator Tony Warren in the 1960s.

The actor passed away on Monday, September 6, 2021, but news of his death was announced on social media by former Corrie writer Daran Little today, after it was first reported on the blog.

Daran wrote on Twitter: “Very sad to read of the passing of my dear Ernst Walder.

“An original C St cast member who quickly became Tony Warren’s boyfriend before Tony caught him in bed with another cast member.”

Daran added: “Ernst used to send my sons chocolates every Christmas and was the most charming man.”

He is best known to the public for having played Ivan in Corrie, a role he held between 1960 and 1963, then from 1966 to 1967.

Ernst made his last appearance on the cobbles on September 27, 1967.

Fans of the star shared their tributes on Twitter.

One person wrote: “Sad to read of Ernst Walder’s death, he played Ivan Cheveski in Coronation Street and was one of the original characters in 1960. Extremely close to Pat Phoenix, he had so much charisma in those early years . Very sad to read of his passing.”

Ernst has worked with the likes of Bill Roache – who plays Ken Barlow on the soap since December 9, 1960.

Bill is the only remaining original cast member and recently celebrated his 90th birthday with a special documentary about his life on the soap.

He previously told The Mirror: “Somebody said to me, ‘Listen Bill, you’re in the Guinness Book of Records, you’ve got the MBE, you’ve been in Coronation Street for over 60 years, what’s – what else is there?

“I said to him, ‘I would like to be the first centenarian who is still in the cast of an ongoing drama.

“That’s my goal, to turn 100 and still work on Coronation Street.

“As long as they want me and as long as I can do it, I will keep doing it.”
