NYMag writer warns Republican leaders unchecked by liberal media would ‘govern like a one-party state’

New York Magazine writer Jonathan Chait slammed Republicans for their skepticism of mainstream media reporters in a Wednesday article.

In his article, “Without Media Accountability, Republicans Will Govern Like a One-Party State,” Chait complained that Republicans refuse to answer or sit down with reporters because they think reporters are biased.

Chait’s main example was when the Florida Republican Party banned certain journalists and media outlets from participating in their Sunshine Summit event, a gathering of Florida Republicans.

“Last week, the Florida Republican Party held its annual Sunshine Summit, which was marked by a new policy: Mainstream media were not allowed to cover the event. Instead, the only” news “would be transmitted by conservatively approved sources,” he wrote.

Chait suggested that Republicans have put in place an “incentive structure” to “evade any accountability whatsoever.”

“The only ‘journalists’ they deem legitimate are those who work functionally for them. They communicate with their base via a news echo chamber which grants them an almost unlimited right to violate ethics, norms or their own promises,” Chait warned. “The elimination of all standards – except, of course, loyalty to conservative ideology – has an inevitable effect on the quality of their governance.”

However, Chait admitted that the news media has shifted somewhat to the left in recent years, but claimed that this shift does not apply so much to political journalism.

“It is difficult to analyze this topic without forming an opinion on the underlying issue of media bias, and there are few issues more prone to bias than the topic of media bias itself. My opinion is that mainstream media has an overall liberal streak, and that it has grown over time as legacy media brands have hired staff from new online outlets that have no tradition of objectivity,” he wrote. “But these changes have left their strongest imprint in culture and lifestyle coverage, while political news has mostly retained its traditional character.”

Chait continued to focus on Florida when he pointed to a quote from Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in which he said the state of Florida was not going to “allow mainstream media to get involved in our primaries” or allow a “group of left-wing media people asking questions of our candidates.”

He lamented the way DeSantis treats reporters as left-wing activists.

“DeSantis has delighted conservatives by airing his belief that great journalists are left-wing activists whom he treats as enemies,” he wrote.

This isn’t the first time Chait has condemned the Republican Party or DeSantis as budding authoritarians. Chait spilled a beehive on Twitter after claiming, “DeSantis is a deeply authoritarian figure who solidifies the right-wing fringe groups that Trump has brought into the party.”

DeSantis publicist Christina Pushaw posted a response to reporters complaining about being kicked out of the Sunshine Summit.

“It has come to my attention that some liberal media activists are angry that they are not allowed to attend #SunshineSummit this weekend. My message to them is to try and cry about it. Next , go kickboxing and grab a margarita. And write the same hit track you were gonna write anyway,” she tweeted.
