Jeremy Slater, fresh off the success of moon knight for Disney+, writing a sequel in 2021 mortal combat, a movie that made a huge hit on HBO Max and helped make the app a success at a time when Warner Bros. didn’t earn much in theaters. The sequel is in pre-production, with no specific release date in mind. During a recent moon knight interview with ComicBook.com, we asked Slater about the plans for the video game sequel, and he teased that he plans to have some fun with the deaths in MK2. The fight-ending murders, which made the original mortal combat video games, notorious to parent groups, have been baked into the DNA of nearly every adaptation since.
Of course, it has to be story and character driven, not just an excuse to slice someone up. That’s the balance Slater says he has to strike.
“I feel like I’m gore in mortal combat is awesome and it’s part of what people come for, you always have to find that balance between fun gore and gross gore, right?” Slater said. “Because there are times when you rip the someone’s heart or the best kill in the first movie is Kung Lao’s Turning Hat cuts it in half and it’s the perfect example of fun gore because it’s disgusting, but everyone’s laughing at the same time , is not it ? You want to make sure that everyone is kind of laughing at the kind of daring gore and they’re not sitting there kind of sickened by close-ups of dripping, visceral innards and things like that. There’s an ironic aspect to Mortal Kombat in terms of the violence and the gore, there’s a little nod to the audience and saying, “Yeah, we know it’s ridiculous, but it’s really fun and we’re all in on the joke together.” And when you find the right balance, I think that’s where you get moments like that incredibly bloody first battle that opens the first movie with a score with Hanzo sort of ripping through all the assassins or you get the hat gag or things like that. So we’re looking to emulate those bloody moments from the first one that were really, really successful and got huge reactions from the audience and how can we give the audience even more this time around.”
