Local journalism needs local journalists. Every two weeks, we will spotlight the staff members of the Township Repository who serve the Stark County community.
I’m originally from Springfield, Ohio. I have been a reporter for the Cantonal Depot for 43 years. My assigned coverage area is eastern and southern Stark County, which includes communities such as Minerva, Louisville, Canton Township, and East Canton. Also, my coverage area encompasses parts of Carroll County.
I write about everything from political activities to education to business development.
Why I became a journalist
Since my childhood, I have always loved to write and read. As I got older, what I got involved in evolved. I went from comic books to sports magazines to newspapers and newsmagazines.
My teenage dream was to become a sportscaster (because I wasn’t very good as an athlete). I moved past that and focused on being a journalist. I was a teenager at the time of Watergate, and the reporting was very interesting then.
What I like most about my job
Be among the first to be on the scene of an event. I like having the responsibility of interpreting what is happening and conveying its meaning to the audience.
My favorite story or stories I’ve worked on
I really don’t have a favorite story because if I come up with one, later I will recall another story that will stand out beyond the one I mentioned.
I will say that I most enjoy working on stories of development projects, whether economic or residential.
The biggest challenge I face
Understand the communities and people I meet. Sometimes I find myself in communities that may be different from those I am used to. It can be hard to suppress personal feelings and be completely impartial about what you’re dealing with.
What I like to do when I’m not working
I like gardening. Of course, it’s a hot weather hobby, unless you have houseplants. I enjoy working with nature and watching things grow and mature.
I also like to read, especially history.
