Local writer turning a book into a musical play; casting call now open

AUGUSTA, Georgia (WJBF) — A local writer turns her book into a musical play.

Last year NewsChannel 6 brought you Marquita Coleman. She’s a former correctional officer who wrote a book, Redemption: Taste of a Woman’s Rage, which takes the reader behind the walls of the facility to give them a glimpse of what’s going on there. She joined Good Morning Augusta weekend presenter Shawn Cabbages to talk about her new effort.

Shawn:
Why was it so important for you, first of all, to write this book?

MARQUITE:
Well, honestly, I wanted to send the message that anyone can become corrupt working in the prison system and they can become vulnerable and naïve to the system. And, you know, I just wanted to get the message across so anything could happen. It may alert you, you know, your freedom may be compromised. That’s what I decided to do.

Shawn:
So you wrote the book and now it’s going to be a musical play.

MARQUITE:
Yes that is correct.

Shawn:
OK. So you organize a casting. Tell us a bit about that.

MARQUITE:
Yes. So the casting is going to be a virtual casting. It will be April 2 at 2:30 p.m. So what I would like everyone to do is contact me. Anyone who is interested. Anyone can apply, anyone can submit. My point of contact would therefore be [email protected] When they submit their information, the only thing they would need to submit is their name, CV, if they have one, and also if they don’t have a new portrait, they can also submit a selfie as long that it’s a headshot and not the whole body. OK.

Shawn:
So when will the play take place? Do you already have this date?

MARQUITE:
Yes. The musical theater play will take place at the Imperial Theater and it would be on October 29. Also, we would have three shows in one day. So if you miss a show, you can join the second or third show. Nice. You know, which makes it very convenient for everyone.

Shawn:
It just won’t be August. So you’re trying to get that across the country next year.

MARQUITE:
Yes. I am. Most people ask me, you know, are you trying to be like Tyler Perry? Yes.

Shawn:
So, you are a busy woman, you are constantly working, so I’m sure you have other projects you are working on as well.

MARQUITE:
In fact, right now I’m hosting a power networking gala. The location is to be determined. But we are looking to schedule it for June 25 and the gala is to raise money for the musical play. Search for sponsors, willing to contribute or become a real sponsor or partner. I have sponsorship packages available for anyone interested in sponsoring or donating to the cause. The musical theater piece is organized to raise awareness about AIDS, domestic abuse, domestic violence and also gun violence.
