We are currently hiring a full-time News Editor and Writer to stay on top of the latest tech news that matters and share it with our readers, How-To Geek style of course. Do you want to throw your hat in the ring? So read on and find out more!

News Editor and Writer – Full Time, Remote

Are you an experienced writer who would be comfortable working in a remote, fast-paced environment, staying on top of the latest tech news, and writing it for our readers? This might be the job for you!

(Note: This job is a permanent remote work from home position.)

In short, How-To Geek is looking for a strong technology writer. You must have experience detecting and covering relevant and timely topics. You should also be broadly familiar with Microsoft Windows and other popular consumer technology platforms.

How-To Geek is a service journalism site. You will cover “news you can use” and topics that will be relevant to our readers rather than industry news about venture capital investments and IPOs. You’ll often explain technical topics in the news, whether it’s the details of how a security breach works or the meaning of a new technology standard. Also, we’re not just looking for someone to rewrite tech news or press releases for other sites.

what you would do

  • Stay up to date with the latest exciting developments in consumer technology, especially before other websites cover them. Find the things we need to cover for our audience. (Again: Microsoft Windows is a particularly important topic for us! However, our coverage is and will be broad.)
  • Write the news yourself, ensuring we have timely coverage of everything we need to cover, emphasizing the angles that make sense to our audience and readers.
  • Work with staff and possibly freelance writers to quickly write and publish news stories, as needed. You would edit and publish their work to make sure it’s a piece we can be proud of.
  • Communicate with the editor to ensure your coverage matches the website readership.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrable experience writing technology news and a keen interest in staying abreast of the latest developments
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Windows in particular, but also other major operating systems (desktop and mobile) and applications, as well as a solid understanding of general technology
  • Ability to dive into new technology topics and learn them quickly
  • Experience writing (and possibly editing) technology articles
  • Detail-oriented and deadline-oriented, with a do-it-yourself attitude
  • Great attention to detail with emphasis on precision and quality
  • Ability to prioritize work to balance multiple projects and deadlines
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working in WordPress is preferred
  • Basic working knowledge of SEO principles is a plus
