Hiring: writer and digital content manager

The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is seeking an energetic and astute writer and digital content manager to play a crucial role in supporting the center’s relationships with a wide range of audiences – with an emphasis on writing and editing compelling copy, managing digital and social media content, and facilitating press visibility. This role will report to the Director of Communications and will support the Communications team’s tasks of translating and amplifying the Centre’s work with the overall goal of raising its national and international profile and advancing its public interest mission.

As a digital content writer and manager, you will:

  • Write dynamic and concise content, including website copy, the weekly newsletter, blog posts about the work of community members, social media content, Center news announcements and campaigns by associated emails.

  • Write compelling stories about Center research and programs, working with the Visual Communications Manager and Events Manager to identify opportunities for on-site interviews and event coverage.

  • Manage Berkman Klein Center’s social media strategy and social accounts, including Twitter and Facebook, generating original daily content that deepens engagement with key audiences. Monitor, analyze and report weekly social media analytics to Director.

  • Manage the team’s editorial calendar in Asana and Outlook, ensuring proper delegation flows between the communications team and internal collaborators.

  • Work with the Director of Communications to create a single messaging framework and socialize internal publishing standards to ensure consistent application of language for marketing materials and outreach to other stakeholders.

  • Promptly respond to incoming inquiries from journalists and connect them with appropriate experts in the Berkman Klein Center community, escalating inquiries to the Director as necessary. Write press releases and pitches, create and maintain a press list and directory of BKC community experts for topical press inquiries, and track news coverage and press mentions for the social media amplification and impact reporting.

  • Work with Berkman Klein Center project teams and community academics to assess copy and resource needs for digital content around events, announcements and launches. Create a pipeline and associated approval flows in Asana to deliver texts and resources, consult projects on the potential to amplify their work by identifying newsworthy content, ensuring representation on social channels of the Berkman Klein Center for promoting initiatives and managing research submissions to open-access outlets.

  • Collaborate and liaise with people at the Center and the University and engage the diverse community of the Berkman Klein Center to ensure the achievement of communication goals, including the elevation of new voices and underrepresented communities of practice.

  • Provide support for the management and maintenance of website content in Drupal CMS.

  • Lead collection of assets and copies for institutional writing projects such as annual reports and donor updates.
