Here’s how a travel writer compares flight prices around the world

Have you ever needed a vacation? Don’t even care where you’re going, but are up for an adventure, somewhere away from your usual routine? Well, you’re not alone – and when that feeling gets the better of us, Google Flights has made it easier – at least for me – to pick up and go, just in time (which is just before I exhausts me and plays an irrational game).

It might be hard to believe, but Google Flights is actually one of the best travel search engines for cheap flights around the world. As it has the widest reach and the most accurate results, Google Flights is technically the best, as other search engines simply cannot compare to its speed and search results. But how exactly does this work to your advantage?

The idea is to use the Google Flights Explore page to win. Just entering some filters, dates and times might lead you to build your schedule around a (domestic) flight that you only paid $50 for, and we don’t know about you, but that’s indeed a bargain for us. Follow the step-by-step guide below to learn how to master the search engine and use Google Flights Explore as your optimal cheap flight website.

Inflation hindering your travel plans in 2022? Here's how to save

Step 1: When you know you have free time and just want to take a trip, access a little-known feature called Google Flights Explore. Access it by first entering “Google Flights” in your URL.

2nd step: Once on the Google Flights page, use the “explore” tab. You can also access this page by going to flight.google.com/explore

Step 3: Select the ‘flights only’ option and if you have to, you can then add filters including travel time, number of stops, airlines, baggage and more. You’ll then see the cheapest options for your filters, but we suggest exploring with an open mind.

What is “slow travel” and where should I go?

Step 4: If it didn’t automatically populate for you, start by entering your home airport. Then simply explore on the map the options available to you around the world.

Step 5: You can then book directly with the airline option that Google Flights Explore gives you and you’re ready for that on-the-map adventure that awaits.

Remember that you can adapt the dates or the destination area to your liking, such as Europe or the United States. But our best advice is to be open and start learning what adventure travel is really about – in this case, head somewhere unfamiliar and have an amazing trip on the cheap.
