VIDEO OF THE DAY

Dreamer’s debut in Superman: Son of Kal-El #13 – written by acclaimed author Tom Taylor alongside Nicole Maines with gorgeous art by Clayton Henry – has been in the works for some time, with Nia Nal apparently an incredibly important part of Jonathan Kent and Jay Nakamura’s battle against the evil President Bendix. TomTaylorwriter of Superman: Son of Kal-El as well as other beloved DC Comics series like Nightwing, Deceased, Injustice, and Black Knights of Steel, shared a preview of the upcoming issue in a Twitter post welcoming Dreamer and Nicole Maines to the DC Universe. Commenting on the tweet, Nicole Maines said: “She’s there! Lo and behold, I get emotional!indicating how important this comic must be to Maines, who is an incredible trans activist outside of her acting and now, writing comics. On Dreamer’s debut in Superman: Son of Kal-El Nicole Maines had this to say,

Jon Kent and Nia Nal are two characters who have a lot in common, both as superheroes with the weight of the world on their shoulders and as youngsters with incredibly big shoes to fill. Weaving their stories together for Superman: Son of Kal-El with Tom was complete fun, and it’s only a little pun when I say Superman and Dreamer are a brilliant new Dream-Team.”

Preview for Son of Kal-El #13 shows boyfriends Jon and Jay Nakamura retreating to the Fortress of Solitude after Jay’s identity as the Voice of Truth is revealed, only to find that Dreamer has somehow broken into the Fortress Superman’s supposedly impenetrable! The dramatic preview goes on to reveal that Nia was able to enter the Fortress by browsing the dream of one of Clark’s menageries of intergalactic exotic animals he keeps in the Fortress, desperately doing so even though she didn’t. never attempted before because it has terrible news for Superman and Jay about Bendix’s next move and how his machinations will threaten the lives of all DC heroes. As this is Nia’s first official DCU debut, it will be fascinating to see if Tom Taylor and Nicole Maines decide to keep Dreamer’s origin story as the half-alien ancestor of Nura Nal, Legion of Super-Heroes heroine Dream Girl, or if any of her backstory will even be revealed in Son of Kal-El.

It’s honestly refreshing and uplifting to see a major comic book publisher like DC Comics not only transport an original transgender character from TV show to comic book, but also give the original Dreamer actress multiple chances to write and collaborate on his comic book appearances, especially since Dreamer is too starring in his own original graphic novel written by Maines.
