Conroy Center Writers Residency Program – Fall 2022

Deadline: September 15, 2022

Applications are open for the Conroy Center Writers Residency Program – Fall 2022. In October 2022, the nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center will offer its fifth Conroy Center Writers Residency, accessible to writers of all genres.

Situated on a salt marsh, the residence of MarshSong Cottage offers an inspiring and creative space in the heart of Pat Conroy’s beloved low country for an eight-day stay. The place of residence is a guest house on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, about 15 minutes from downtown Beaufort and 15 minutes from the beach at Hunting Island State Park.

The residency will begin October 27 and end November 3, overlapping with the annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival, during which the selected writer will have the opportunity to attend author talks, special events and up to three writers’ workshops.

Eligibility

  • Open to published and unpublished authors.
  • If you have already applied but were not selected, they encourage you to apply again. Pat Conroy was a mentor to writers at all stages of their careers and they want to honor that legacy.

Application

Submit the following by September 15, 2022 to [email protected] with the subject line CONROY CENTER WRITER RESIDENCY:

  • Tell a story. What is your current work? Let them know in 200 words (no more) in the body of the email.
  • What does a marsh view residence offer you? They would like to know why you want a residency in the swamp and how, specifically, it will impact your writing/experience/story. So if you live nearby, double your efforts to convince them that it should be you rather than someone who has never been to the low country. Be specific and say them in 200 words (no more) in the body of the email.
  • Who are you? Send a short biography of no more than 100 words, along with your contact details, also in the body of the email.
  • Do you have a favorite Pat Conroy book? If so, tell them which one, and why, in about 50 words in the body of the email. Don’t have a favorite Conroy book? Then tell them which book by another author means the most to you and why.
  • Include a written sample of your work, 3-5 pages of double-spaced prose, or 3-5 poems (collectively no more than 5 pages), attached as a PDF.

Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of Conroy Center advisors. The selected writer will be notified by September 15, 2022. The residency will start on October 27 and end on November 3.
